Tiresome individuals
Warning, this is a rant.
Of course there is much on social media these days concerning political propaganda, refugee issues, and tourists/people being stupid about wild animals.
We all have opinions. That is what offers good healthy debate on a variety of issues. An exchange of ideas, a healthy debate, is always a good thing. But lately on various forms of social media there is less and less respectable exchanges. Rather exchanges are rapidly falling to disrespect, name calling and rudeness.
An example is I've been drawn into three discussions this week. One involving a video clip of young children who are refugees discussing why they wish to leave their countries. There are also positings along with this of images of the stark reality that is what these children call home. Bombed out buildings, rubble everywhere, bombs and gunfire are the daily norms. These children often loose parents, siblings, and friends sometimes in a single day.
The rudeness of many individuals that said "they" should stay and fight for their country. That the 'men are cowards' for running away rather then fight for their county. And more rude and mis-informed scathing remarks.
One individual said that the crime rates are up a great deal in the countries that have taken in refugees. I googled to find out if that information was true as I had only heard of a few instances in the news that Syrian refugees were the perpetrator of assaults and more. I didn't find any. I asked the individual to please cite his credible sources so I could read it.
His response, "you can google it yourself" I replied what I found above and also said I did find where crime was up, but the victims of the crime were the refugees. I again asked for his source of information and then I lost my temper and told him basically if he didn't have any to shut up.
On another discussion concerning the death of a harbor seal pup,, I made a comment asking why the pup had not been taken to a rehab center and evaluated before euthanized. Several people immediately jumped on my comment that I was 'stupid' and didn't read the article. I posted that I had indeed read the article and no where did it say anything that the pup had received any form of medical survey before it was determined to euthanize.

No matter how many times you read the article, the questions I pose are not revealed in the article. My comments can be found on the comment section of the article.
Some people did agree with me, but those that didn't resorted to name calling and rudeness. Saying things along the lines that 'you can't read', or 'they addressed those things in the article' etc. I did ask for people to show me specifically in the article those questioned items were answered, but no one took up the challenge.
To shorten this blog, I have found that when people have opposing points of view, and do NOT have credible sources to back up the argument, things rapidly disintegrate into argumentative name calling. Rather then using credible evidence to support a position, or to provide that source when asked, they will respond "you can google it yourself". Which really isn't offering THE source that they are using.
Long and short of it, if you are going to attempt to get people to your way of thinking through a healthy discussion, be prepared to offer supporting evidence from credible sources. Don't become argumentative and for heaven's sake, it is OK to agree to disagree and move on.
