History investigations
I've found that the older I've gotten, the more interested I've become in history.
Traveling around the world an making stops in places like Greece, Egypt and more have also served to pique my interest and revisit some of those old history lessons- (Thanks Magistra for grounding me with more than just the Latin language!)
Of course I'm most interested in my own family history and how it relates to the actions and events of the era it stems. This has also been fueled by my own family's mystery.
My maternal grandfather was not raised by his biological parents, rather by an aunt and uncle. Not an uncommon occurrence in the late 1800's but it does create a hole in my family's knowledge. My mom, understandably, would really like to know her roots. And so, I have embarked on a journey of research and exploration.
Genealogy researching has really opened my eyes to various items about my family I didn't know; It wasn't only my maternal grandfather I started researching, but all parts of my family tree. I've found that I am related to one of our more recent past presidents. (unbeknownst to any of our family!)
Delving into my own history, I've learned to look the events surrounding the era's I'm looking for. This has helped me to understand my ancestor's behaviors and has lead me to some interesting sites to research.
I have also discovered that Genealogy has exploded in recent years for 'hobbyists' all over the world.Groups and societies and clubs have sprung up virtually everywhere. With the exception of Marinette WI, my home town. This is soon to be remedied.
The Stephenson Public Library is having an organizational meeting on Monday, September 21, 2015 at 6:30 PM. It is my understanding that the focus of this group will be to offer support to find ways past the proverbial brick wall, offer suggestions on items to search, where to search, how to keep information organized, and providing information on the library's collections and access to additional information. It is my hope that this group will gain solid footing and be a spring board for anyone who wishes to delve into their own histories.
How has my own research gone concerning my maternal grandfather? So far it has taken me on a road trip to Kansas. I was able to find one answer- although not one I was even looking for--and opened several new lines to question and follow. I've recently tracked down a newspaper from the era in the town he lived in. I was able to obtain a copy of the paper which had been microfilmed and archived. I'm now in the process of reading a newspaper from 1883. I've managed the first month so far, with no direct answers to my burning questions, but I have already gained six new possible leads!
If you do come to the meeting on September 21 at the Stephenson Public Library, make sure you cme armed with your questions and you might want to bring paper and a writing utensil---or perhaps your laptop. Lets smash those brick walls together!!
