A Bit of an Observation
Like most of you, I peruse the news and read those items that pique my curiosity. Today was no exception.
On one of the more popular websites I ran across an article that gave me pause. Actually two articles and while they seem to be about different 'things' I found them to be particularly similar in the underlying issues.
First, an article about the county clerk in Morehead Kentucky who has refused to give out marriage licenses to gay couples. She did of course spend a few days in jail for contempt and then promised to not interfere with her deputy clerks in granting marriage licenses.
I'm sure you are aware that she has in fact defied that court order and has altered the format of the marriage licenses in such a way to cast doubt on the validity of them. Her defense? It's against God's will for her to issue the license.
I'll get back to this in a bit.
The other articles (as there was actually more than one) deals with the idea of Islam in the United States.
In fact, a few of the republican candidates have made remarks, or failed to make remarks as the case may be, about the fitness of a Muslim to run the country. That a Muslim has no business being a president. In fact, some republicans wish to introduce legislation that Islam be outlawed.
You may be thinking, how are these two things related? I'll tell you. Both speak with an undercurrent of hate.
The Framers of the constitution were clear- this government was to be structured to allow all person freedom of religion. Remember that's why many came here in the beginning. People wishing to worship however they wanted?
In fact the Framers determined that this new experiment in the new world would establish a government that was run, not on any particular religious belief, but allow a system of checks and balances.
The statements and sentiments against Islam smacks of the same types of propaganda employed by Hitler. You do remember what happened when he came to power right?
A refusal to understand a culture or religion that is not like our own, tends to breed unease, fear and yes hate.
So, getting back to the clerks refusal to issue marriage licenses. I'm sorry, but it is not up to her to make the decision if gay people are in the wrong in God's eyes. It is NOT her place, or anyone else, to judge anyone. That is for God to decide. Anyone that presumes otherwise will, I'm pretty sure, have to answer to Him.
Besides, I don't seem to recall, I could be wrong here, but I don't seem to recall anywhere in the Bible that says we should hate our neighbors, or condemn those that do not think like us. I DO seem to recall a commandment that states love your neighbor?
