Day 5- Triggers
Day five and I have confirmed two triggers for myself. Boredom and reading.
Boredom is a fairly easy 'fix'. Just find something to do. Problem is I usually decide to go and read a good book. And I tend to snack when I read.
This is not a new thing. I remember once when I was in high school. I was looking in the cupboards for something to eat when my Mom came and and said, 'you must be going to read." I remember I stopped looking in the cupboard and kinda stared a her and asked her how she knew. Her response "because you are looking for something to eat."
This was re-enforced when my sons were learning to read. My oldest was having a conversation with my mom about learning to read. He proudly informed his grandmother that he knew how to read. He demonstrated by picking up his book, and grabbed the popcorn dish, eating a few kernels before turning the page. He told grandma that's how mom reads.
Since I LOVE to read, and I read A LOT, this is a problem for me.
I've tried snacking on 'healthy' things like veggie sticks- just doesn't do it for me. But, I have discovered that fruit works. So now I wash a bowl of grapes and I have a banana on stand by. If the book is well written and I can really get into the story I tend not to eat. So I've identified it is the first few minutes that I'm 'at risk'.
Other ways I'm trying to combat the reach for food syndrome is to reach for a glass of water. I use various Crystal lite products to shake up the flavor but it helps on a few levels. Keeps me filling full, hydrated and get the water in for the day!
I've stocked up on a few WW 2 point snacks for those times when I just gotta have it. And I decided that I can go ahead and treat myself to popcorn but I do pop it in oil on the stove in a frying pan. No butter and use flavorings to really make it different and satisfying. And count it.
I've also learned that writing the blog has helped me stay focused and on track.
